Rod’s musical journey began early in life, nurtured by his education in the Newark Public School System. Initially starting with the violin, he soon moved on to the clarinet, before discovering his true passion for the saxophone after being inspired by Grover Washington Jr.’s “Mr. Magic.” This piece served as his audition for entry into Arts High School in Newark, marking the start of a remarkable musical career.
A versatile and accomplished musician, Rod’s style spanned a wide array of genres, including R&B, Smooth Jazz, Classic Soul, Old School, and New Jazz. He meticulously composed, recorded, and produced his music in his home studio, earning a reputation as a skilled and dedicated artist.

Rod’s presence was well-known in the local music scene, where he performed at various venues across New Jersey, including the famed “Chico’s House of Jazz,” and at numerous jazz festivals. His talent also took him beyond state lines, as he performed at the pre-celebration party jazzfest at the Red Cat Jazz Cafe in Houston, Texas, in October 2011, alongside other renowned musicians like Dean James, Kyle Turner, and Marion Meadows.
Rod continued to share his gift with the world, performing in events such as the December 2011 concert with Bob Baldwin at Chico’s House of Jazz, and the 2012 jazz festival in Asbury Park, New Jersey, where he was a featured artist.
As Rod was preparing to release his latest CD, “Hands Down,” with a special event at The Ivory Lounge in San Antonio, Texas, his passing comes as a heartbreaking loss to the music community. His legacy lives on through his albums, “The Journey” and “Hands Down,” both available on iTunes and Amazon, as well as through the countless lives he touched with his music.
