Born on April 1, 1934, in Shelby County, Alabama, Thomas was the son of the late Dr. Ralph D. Doner and the late Josephine B. Doner of Auburn, Alabama. His life was a testament to unwavering commitment and service, both professionally and personally.

A Veteran and Educator

Thomas Byers Doner proudly served in the U.S. Navy before pursuing a distinguished career in education. He earned his BS, Med, and EDS degrees from Auburn University, dedicating twenty-five years to the DeKalb County, Georgia school system. As a principal, he positively impacted countless students and educators. His leadership was widely recognized through his roles as President of the Georgia Elementary Principals Association and Chairman of the Southeastern Elementary Principals.

A Commitment to Volunteering

Following his retirement from education, Thomas continued his commitment to community service. He contributed to Mystery Valley and Bent Tree golf courses and volunteered over 6,000 hours with the Arizona State Park System. His dedication extended to the Georgia National Cemetery, where he dedicated more than 10,000 hours, showcasing his enduring spirit of giving back.

Family and Legacy

Thomas was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jayette Blom. He is survived by his son, Scott Doner; daughters, Kim Dicus (John), Sharon Simons (Richard), Amy Leathers (Craig), Laura Blom, and Andrea Edwards; grandchildren, Robert Doner (Julie), Hannah Leathers, Sadie Leathers, and Carl Leathers; and great-grandchildren, Isaac Doner and Annabeth Doner. His family was his pride and joy, and he treasured the time spent with them.

A memorial service to honor Thomas Byers Doner will be held at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA, with military honors on Monday, September 2, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. This ceremony will pay tribute to his life of service and dedication.
