Early Life and Education
Born on July 13, 1927, in Madison County, Kentucky, Neil was the son of Gilbert “Gip” and Eliza Catherine Parks Parke. He grew up in Madison County, attending school and graduating from Central High School, where he excelled in basketball. After high school, Neil attended Eastern Kentucky University and served in the United States Marine Corps from 1945 to 1946.
A Lasting Love
In 1946, Neil met Dorothy Mae Parrish, the love of his life. They married in 1948 and recently celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in December. Their enduring love and partnership have been a source of inspiration to many.
Career and Community Involvement
Neil dedicated much of his life to farming, raising cattle, tobacco, and hay. He also worked for the Kentucky Department of Motor Transportation and later served the Richmond community through the United States Postal Service. In 1954, Neil co-founded the former Parke-Griggs Funeral Home. After retiring from the post office in 1987, he continued his service to families at the Combs Parsons & Collins Funeral Home.
Together, Neil and Dorothy were instrumental in establishing the Richmond Little League Program and were ardent supporters of Eastern Kentucky University, particularly its football program. Neil was known for his love of golfing and fishing, hobbies that brought joy to those around him.
Faith and Leadership
A devoted member of The Red House Baptist Church, Neil served as a Deacon and participated in various committees over the years. He witnessed the church’s growth and the construction of new facilities, and his strong faith and commitment to Jesus Christ made him a role model for many.
