Preliminary reports indicate that Matt, aged 45, suffered a medical emergency during the night while on duty at Fire Station 9.
A Dedicated Career
Matt Forand joined the New Bedford Fire Department in 2006 after graduating from the New Bedford Firefighting Academy. Throughout his 18-year career, he exemplified unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of New Bedford’s residents. Most recently, he served with distinction at Engine Co. 9, earning a reputation for bravery and dedication.
Heroic Service Recognized
Over the years, Matt’s courage and professionalism were recognized with numerous accolades. In 2014, he received the Medal of Valor at the Firefighter of the Year Awards for his heroic actions during a fire on Dartmouth Street, where he rescued an unconscious occupant from a burning building. In March 2023, he earned a Unit Citation as a member of Engine Co. 6 for his outstanding efforts during the Royal Crown Apartment fire.
