Military Service
Rev. Wheeler’s military career began when he enlisted in the US Navy, serving in the Submarine Service from 1958 to 1962, where he achieved the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class. His commitment to service continued as he joined the US Air Force as an Air Force Chaplain, attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Alongside his military duties, Rev. Wheeler pursued higher education, earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine and a Master of Divinity from Bangor Theological Seminary.
A Devoted Pastor
Rev. Wheeler’s ministry spanned several decades and included leadership roles at various churches. His significant contributions included serving at Rensselaer Presbyterian Church, Woodside Presbyterian Church in Troy, NY, and the Second Presbyterian Church in Amsterdam, NY, which later merged to become the United Presbyterian Church. For over 21 years, he played a pivotal role in rebuilding the church after a devastating fire in January 2000, earning the title of Pastor Emeritus. Even after retirement, he briefly returned to ministry at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Menands, NY. Throughout his career, Rev. Wheeler actively participated in numerous boards and community organizations, reflecting his deep commitment to serving others.
Family and Legacy
Rev. Wheeler married his cherished wife, Marilyn Garnsey Wheeler, on September 8, 1962. Together, they raised a loving family. He is survived by his children, Danny J. (Michele) Wheeler, Jr. of Albany, NY, and Jennifer (Mark) Doesburg of Ballston Lake, NY; his brothers, Dr. David Montgomery, Timothy Montgomery, and Dr. Matthew Montgomery; his sisters, Micky Shifflett Decker and Terri Shifflett Lee; and his grandchildren, including Jonathan, Andrew, Jacob, Noah, Carter, Ellen, Alexander, Elliot, and Melena, along with one great-granddaughter and his beloved dog, Sadie. Rev. Wheeler was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Maryn Wheeler Surrey, who passed away on February 3, 2014.
